Urban Sociology Extra Credit Assignment - SuBin Choi

What does it mean that a public place is successful?

I think that a successful public place is a 'place that people use a lot'. These feelings, such as comfort and familiarity, can also be said to be a criterion for success, but that feeling can also be a reason why many people come to the place in the end. I think that being a public place itself is intended to reflect the state of society in which several people belong together. Therefore, being a successful public place implies that it is a place that people use a lot.

“Every successful indoor space provides food”. Do you agree?

Not every successful indoor space serves food. Amusement parks and squares provide food, but indoor spaces such as hospitals and museums that clearly have the purpose and intention of visiting do not provide food separately. Therefore, I think the availability of food depends on the purpose and characteristics of the indoor space.

“Shops are important for liveliness and the additional pedestrian flows they attract.” Can we think of places that should have more stores? Would the campus be better if it had more shopping places?

I don't think it's good to have more shopping places on campus. Campus is definitely a space for students, and I think that students should come first. While having the advantage of increasing the convenience of students with more shopping venues is that there will be more people on campus who are not directly related to the school, this can lead to confusion. The place where there should be more shops can be said to be amusement parks. There are some shops in the amusement park, but I don't think it's the number that can accommodate all of the people who visit the place called an amusement park. In this regard, I think we need more stores because there may be inconvenience and frustration of having to wait for a long time.

Try to come up with at least one idea on how to make this building and its surroundings more friendly.

One way to make the building and its surroundings friendly is to put things that we can easily see and feel comfortable with. Not only are flowers or trees something we can easily see, but they give us comfort. This comfort is an intimate and special feeling you can get from nature. If you put flowers and trees and even a bench, you can make the building and its surroundings more friendly.
